My "hot rod" motor

The engine on the cover of the April, 2002 issue of The Valley News will power my "nostalgia hot rod." The short block was one of two built by Kyle Holman for a friend, Bill Dasse, who planned to use it in a Pietenpol. Unfortunately Bill was killed in a autogiro accident. When his widow Judy asked me to advertise and sell the airplane project components, I did so and bought one of the two engines for myself.

In late February I asked club member Palmer Lawson to finish assembly and test run the "A" engine. Features of the engine as pictured includes

  • a stock head,
  • drilled crank with full pressure lubrication,
  • a tube type exhaust header by Dan Price,
  • a circa 1945 Zepher intake manifold,
  • dual Holley 94 carburetors,
  • a Volkswagen distributer (later changed to a Ford "B"),
  • a Crager valve cover and a
  • balanced and "chopped" flywheel that's 26 pounds lighter than stock.
