Exhaust

The water-cooled exhaust exits the engine via these manifolds.

The rubber exhaust pipes are "wire-wound" -- prone to giving nasty wounds in the hands of those who mess with them. I don't like wire-wound tubing. I've found some great replacement tube with no wires. Available from Fabicks. Expensive. $200.00 per each 5' length (or $400.00 for the boat).

I'm wondering if part of the exhaust run could be 3 in. EMT. (I've found 3" copper, but it too is expensive -- possibly $200 per 10' length, estimated.) I'd use the Fabick rubber tube from the manifold down & back to where it's a "straight-run" to the thru-hull exhaust fittings. Each run would have four SS hose clamps.

Plans call for removing the two 3" thru-hull fittings, cleaning up the area, re-installing with bedding of 3M 5200.

This from Graingers. Also available LIKE THIS.

Pictured below is EMT with built-in connectors. The 10' EMT without them is $105.10 at Graingers. I'm guessing I'll need two 2'-6" (apx.) pieces.

So much for that idea, 5GUH9 measures 3-7/16" OD.
"3 inch" welded steel pipe, schedule 40 measures 3-1/2" OD.
(Maybe 2-1/2" welded steel pipe will measure apx. 3"?)

It's been suggested we use "high-tension" hose clamps on the exhaust system. (Known as "T-bolt" clamps, I think.

Before clamps are ordered, we'll have to know diameters of hoses in position on manifolds, straight segments, and thru-hull fittings.

Not a very good image -- clipped from youtube -- but shows ridged pipes connected with rubber sectionas.

Look what I've found at "House of Metals" here in St. Louis -->
3 inch O.D., .065 wall.
The flexible portions will be a heavy duty (and no wire) tubing from Fabick Tractor here in St. Louis. Nice stuff, but very expensive.

Here's the SS port exhaust pipe laying on the hull forward of the thru-hull exhaust fitting. Notice all that black crud! It remains after TWO trips to the car wash, and is one of the reasons I've decided to take the boat apart for a very thorough clean-up.

Now seriously considering use of "Intercooler Hose" for connections at manifolds, SS tubing and thru-hull fittings.

A GOOD SOURCE?
ANOTHER?

Here are the manifolds, before and after sandblasting. They will be painted white, like the rest of the engine.

Red marks indicate where paint will burn off from exhaust heat.

The manifolds are heavy. - - 45 lbs. each.

"It needed a little work, but what boat doesn't?"
