I did not like what "my" sand blaster said (he showed me examples of cast aluminum blasted), so I started to clean covers myself:

When removing gasket remains these little "washers" came off.
I'll assume they are spacers built-in as part of gaskets.

(12/6/13) Yesterday, Gateway told me they no longer do car parts.
(too many left by customers who did not pick them up, and
Gateway became their storage facility)
I took the valve covers to BlastCo today, and asked them to bead
blast, prime and paint them WHITE (see below.)
Reminder, I'll be out of town 12/18 - 1/7.
