One of the goals of "cleaning up" the engine is to eliminate oil leaks and seepage. Stamped oil covers can be a problem. Once they've been improperly torqued, they tend to leak oil. So, we've acquired cast aluminum covers, believing their stiffness will make for a cleaner engine.

I'll keep my eye out for a crisp-looking filler cap. (Or maybe just clean and paint this one.) -- 2016 update >> bought an aftermarket chrom plated job, it looks great.

I did not like what "my" sand blaster said (he showed me examples of cast aluminum blasted), so I started to clean covers myself:

When removing gasket remains these little "washers" came off. I'll assume they are spacers built-in as part of gaskets. Are they? (These modern engines are a mystery.) Mark confirmed my suspicions, so I've trashed them.

(12/6/13) Yesterday, Gateway told me they no longer do car parts. (too many left by customers who did not pick them up, and Gateway became their storage facility)
Gateway suggested two companies; one in IL and BlastCo in Wentzville.

I took the valve covers to BlastCo today, and asked them to bead blast, prime and paint them WHITE (see below.)
I'm beginning to like white as an engine color, so asked BlastCo to paint covers white. (They happened to have a half can of some expensive paint "left over" and will have enough to paint my other stuff, too.) They'll do the covers next week, probably finished by Thursday.
"Jason" at BlastCo says he'll try to "wipe" the "green" paint to save (me) some sanding of the "ribbing" atop the covers.

Reminder, I'll be out of town 12/18 - 1/7.

Two examples of white ones:
