1972 Correct Craft Skier MacSkier
Here's a pdf DOWNLOAD in preparation for our start attempt.
On May 11, 2021 we tried to start MacSkier (in Springfield) using a freshly charged battery and starting fluid (Pyroil.). Not only did it not start after some lengthy cranks, gasoline leaked from both of the Holley bowls. After a phone conversation with Bob Kunz the next day, I am convinced the leaks were caused by sticky float valves, caused by "varnish" build-up due to the use (and storage of) ethanol in the fuel. Bob told me I might have been able to stop the leaks with a few hammer taps on the brass screw heads atop the bowls. Leaking gasoline in boat hulls is a very dangerous situation; on May 13 I delivered the Holley to Bob's place for another rebuild. Bob is a fan of Sea Foam so I'll be adding 16 oz. to the fuel in the boat. In hindsight, maybe more vigorous use of the accelerator pump might have got it to run, but I wasn't looking for more loose fuel in the area.
Holly 4160 is a single feed carb with a fuel transfer tube between its two bowls.
There are a number of youtube videos on rebuilding Holleys. Here are two: Gasoline with ethanol:
5/11/21 -- The real problem came from Grant ignoring all the warnings of problems associated with using gasoline containing ethenol. MacSkier was put in storage with a few gallons of "cheap" gas in her tank and fuel system. Ethanol causes problems in stored cars and boats. Ethanol causes the degradation, softening, swelling and destruction of a number of polymers, elastomers, and thermoplastics. This is a significant problem in automobiles manufactured prior to 1982, and in most marine engines manufactured prior to 2000. Ethanol is a clear, colorless alcohol made from a variety of biomass materials called feedstocks (the raw materials used to make a product). Fuel ethanol feedstocks include grains and crops with high starch and sugar content such as corn, sorghum, barley, sugar cane, and sugar beets.
As a wiring reminder: Electric choke. This view, from the starboard side of the boat, shows the wiring of the electric choke. Throttle Linkage. This view, from the port side of the boat, shows linkage as it has been arranged since 2016, when the boat was launched. Here's how the battery was charging BEFORE and AFTER I charged it a few hours on May 12. Here's a map of where ethanol-free gasoline is available in Missouri.
