(A poem by Billy Collins, Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003. The poem was brought to my attention by 1954 high school classmate Jane, along with the comment, "I think we're all in this together. No matter. It's a lovely poem." We are, and it is lovely.)
Forgetfulness
The name of the author is the first to go
as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
Long ago you kissed the names of the nine Muses goodbye
something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps,
Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
It has floated away down a dark mythological river
No wonder you rise in the middle of the night
