Epson V600 Scans
Inexpensive flatbed scanners may have an optical resolution as low as 1200-dpi (although the trend is upward). If a 35mm film frame (1.0 x 1.5 inches) is scanned at that resolution, the image size will be 1200 x 1800 pixels. Simple math. The "Epson Scan" software used to make the scans below offers a number of scanning "modes", but after a few hours exploring the four "modes" (options are . . . Full Auto, Home, Office, and Professional) -- with resolution settings as high as 4800 dpi -- I've decided no better results will be obtained by setting the resolution higher than 2400 dpi. I recommend the "Epson Scan" instructions provided by the University of Michigan. Find them here. The scans below are not necessarily "important" or especially attractive examples. The slides, made in 1986, happened to be readily available when the "new" Epson V600 arrived and were used to explore the recently acquited hardware and software.
